Ducks sign Simon Despres to 5-year, $18.5-million deal

Watch as Simon Despres of the Anaheim Ducks crushes Antoine Roussel of the Dallas Stars with a hit into the boards.

The Anaheim Ducks signed defenceman Simon Despres to a five-year, $18.5-million contract extension Friday.

Despres’ new deal will carry an annual cap hit of $3.7-million.

Despres was acquired at the 2015 trade deadline in exchange for Ben Lovejoy. Despres proved to be a reliable defenceman for the Ducks down the stretch and in the post-season.

The 24-year-old totalled three goals and 23 points in 75 games in 2014-15. He added one goal and seven points in 16 playoff games, while posting a 51.93 per cent Corsi for rating in even strength situations.

Despres’ extension will kick in for the start of 2016-17 season.
