The Philadelphia Flyers have hired former Toronto Maple Leafs assistant Scott Gordon as the new head coach of their AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the club announced Monday.

“We are extremely pleased to add Scott to our organization as head coach of our top affiliate in the Lehigh Valley,” Flyers general Manager Ron Hextall said in the team’s press release. “He brings in a proven track record of success and knowledge as a coach at all levels, and we are confident he can help develop our prospects through our system, as well as lead the Phantoms back to the Calder Cup playoffs.”

Gordon spent three seasons with the Leafs under Ron Wilson and Randy Carlyle and was fired in May 2014 when Brendan Shanahan took over as the team’s president.

Prior to that, the 52-year-old served as head coach of the New York Islanders from 2008-2010.

Gordon’s resume also includes a 221-141-20-27 record in 409 games and five trips to the playoffs as head coach of the AHL’s Providence Bruins, AHL Coach of the Year honours in 2007-08, and an Olympic silver medal as assistant coach of Team USA at the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Riley Cote, an assistant coach with the Phantoms for the past five seasons, will return as an assistant coach of the Phantoms.
