Remember all those preseason trade rumours that said the Vancouver Canucks were desperate to get rid of Roberto Luongo and the remainder of his 12-year, $64-million contract?
While those rumours have all but died down since the season started, general manager Mike Gillis told the Vancouver Sun’s Brad Ziemer that he is more than willing to hold on to the veteran netminder if his price tag is not met.
“Every team is discussing options all the time and we’re just like them, we are discussing different possibilities all the time,” Gillis told the Sun. “We’re open to those discussions if they can improve our hockey team. Right now, we have two great goalies, we’re perfectly happy if we continue this way right through to the end of the playoffs. If something comes our way that we think improves our team in a different way which allows us a better opportunity to win the Stanley Cup, we are going to look at it.”
Whether it’s because of the team’s 6-2 start, their best one under Gillis, or the fact that Luongo is out-performing Cory Schneider in every statistical category is unclear, but the Canucks GM dismissed any suggestions that keeping both goaltenders would serve as a distraction.
Since jittery opening night, Cory Schneider is 3-1-0 with 1.71 GAA. Luongo is 1.53. No wonder Vigneault flips a coin. — Iain MacIntyre (@imacVanSun) February 8, 2013

“I have complete confidence these guys are going to play a lot of hockey, they are going to support one another, that their teammates support them and we don’t see an issue inside our dressing room,” Gillis said. “Look at our schedule, the last two months of the season it’s almost like a playoff schedule, without a break between rounds, and then playoffs begin. Our objective is to get into the playoffs as a team, not as individuals, but as a team”
In six games this season, Luongo has posted a 3-0-2 record to go along with a 1.53 GAA and .940 save percentage while Schneider sports a 3-2-0 record, 2.66 GAA and .908 save percentage in five starts.
