Jordan Staal has never been known as a sniper, but his goal-scoring in the Stanley Cup Final is nearing historic levels.
The Carolina Hurricanes captain tipped in a goal in the first period of Game 5 on Thursday to tie the record for longest goal streak in a Stanley Cup Final.
Staal is the fifth player to score a goal in five consecutive Stanley Cup Final games and is the first to do it in more than 50 years. The others who did it are: Yvan Cournoyer (1973 with the Montreal Canadiens), Jean Beliveau (1956 with the Canadiens), Maurice Richard (1951 with the Canadiens) and Cyclone Taylor (1918 with the Vancouver Millionaires).
Beliveau, Richard and Taylor also did it with goals in the first five games of the Final, as Staal has.
Staal now has six goals total in the series. At 37 years old and 272 days, he is the oldest player in NHL history to score six goals in the Final.
Staal can be the first person to score in six consecutive Stanley Cup Final games in Game 6 on Sunday.
