The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that goaltender Joey MacDonald has joined the team on an Emergency Recall from the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League. Jonas Gustavsson was placed on Injured Reserve and is expected to miss at least one week with a groin injury.
MacDonald earned the 3-2 win by making 32 saves in the Marlies’ season opener against the Hamilton Bulldogs Sunday afternoon. He joined the Maple Leafs as a free agent August 10, 2009. He has previous NHL experience with the Red Wings, Bruins and Islanders.
With Gustavsson down, head coach Ron Wilson said Thursday that Vesa Toskala will likely start the three games in four nights stretch beginning Saturday against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Originally Wilson he had planned for Toskala and Gustavsson to share those starting duties.
Gustavsson appeared in two of the Maple Leafs’ first three games to start the 2009-10 regular season. He has a goals against average of 3.09 in 97:27 of play. The rookie made his first career regular start on Tuesday against the Ottawa Senators at Air Canada Centre and turned aside 26 of 28 shots.
