Early in the second period, Pacioretty drilled McDonagh from behind as the Rangers defenceman played the puck behind his net. Pacioretty was assessed a minor for boarding on the play. McDonagh, who was bloodied from hitting his face off the glass, left the game and did not return.
Rangers coach John Tortorella criticized Pacioretty after the game for leaving his feet on the play.
“Can I ask the first question? How high did Pacioretty jump on his hit, can anyone tell me?” Tortorella asked reporters. “I’m asking you guys. Over/under?”
When a reporter said six inches, Tortorella replied “You’re wrong.”
Pacioretty was shaken up earlier in the game after McDonagh hit him awkwardly into the boards.
The 6-foot-2 winger is the second-leading scorer on the Canadiens with four goals and 13 points in 14 games.
