With the Stanley Cup final winding down, the Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for what should be an eventful off-season.
Leafs general manager Dave Nonis spoke with Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston at the GM meetings in Boston on Wednesday and touched on some of the decisions he’ll be faced with in the coming weeks.
It appears the first item on Nonis’s agenda will be using a compliance buyout to clear cap space before free agency opens up July 5. The buyout window opens 48 hours after the completion of the Stanley Cup final.
The likely target for one of the two buyouts is Mike Komisarek, who carries a $4.5 million cap hit on the final year of his deal. Johh-Michael Liles, who has three years remaining with an annual cap hit of $3.875 million, could be another candidate, although a weak free agent class could create a market for a player with Liles’ skill set.
On the topic of free agents, Nonis said there has been little progress in negotiations with the team’s pending UFAs, including forwards Clarke MacArthur and Tyler Bozak.
Nonis also met with Edmonton Oilers GM Craig MacTavish for 10 minutes on Wednesday. The nature of their discussion was not disclosed.
