Rangers’ Staal hit in eye with slapshot

Marc Staal's injury re-opened an ongoing debate in hockey circles.

Marc Staal suffered a scary injury during the New York Rangers’ win over the Philadelphia Flyers Tuesday night.

In the third period, Kimmo Timonen’s shot from the point was deflected by Jakub Voracek’s stick and landed right in the face of Staal.

The Rangers defenceman was not wearing a visor and appeared to be in severe pain after the puck caused a nasty cut on Staal’s face.

He was able to skate off holding his face but spent several minutes flaling on the ground in pain. Staal did not return to the game after the injury.
