Sneak peek: Daugavins’ new shootout moves

If you are an NHL goaltender who does not play for the Ottawa Senators, you will want to watch this video.

For the Sens’ creative Latvian forward, Kaspars Daugavins, has more than one trick up his sleeve, and if he pulls it out, his highlight could once again be the clip that divides NHL viewers into two camps: hockey is fun! and that’s it, this shootout thing is now a mockery… for real this time!

Daugavins’ gutsy ringette-style spin-o-rama shootout attempt versus the Boston Bruins (but stopped, barely, by goaltender Tuukka Rask) earlier this month gave Twitter a lower-body injury and hockey analysts plenty to debate.

Good/bad news.

As hinted earlier by Senators coach Paul MacLean, who took no issue with his player flexing his style, fans may not have seen the last ringette-inspired shootout attempt by the 24-year-old.

There are more arrows in the quiver.

Watch the footage above, taken during Seantors practice, to see a couple of the variations Daugavins is adding to his unconventional shootout approach.

Of course, to see the move in a game scenario, the stars must align: Daugavins has to first get into the lineup (a sometime healthy scratch, he’s played 19 of the Sens’ 31 games this season); the game has to be knotted after overtime (and maybe after three shooters, as Daugavins tried his stunt as the fourth shooter); and MacLean has to believe his winger has played well enough to give him the shoulder tap.
