P.K. Subban is optimistic he will have a long career with the Montreal Canadiens.
According to NHL.com, the 23-year-old defenceman wants to remain in Montreal, and despite the fact he is still without a contract for next season, Subban is positive he’ll have a long career with the club.
“There’s no question that people know that I enjoy playing (in Montreal),” Subban told NHL.com. “I grew up a Montreal Canadiens fan. I love playing there and I want to play there for the rest of my career.
“When you’re comfortable in a place, everybody would like a long-term deal.”
Subban doesn’t know when a contract will get done and is keeping his focus on his summer training.
“My job is to get myself ready for training camp,” he said. “I could be sitting around on pins and needles waiting for it to happen, and then it happens and I’m not ready for training camp. I have to get myself ready for training camp and a good season. I’ve gotta be ready to play.”
The 23-year-old from Toronto was making $875,000 per season under the terms of his three-year, entry-level contract, according to CapGeek.com. In 160 regular-season games with the Canadiens, he has 76 points along with 12 points in 21 playoff games.
“Ever since that first playoff run (in 2010), the message to me has been they’ve wanted me there for a long time,” Subban mentioned. “At the end of the day it’s about your relationship with the team and if they want to do that.”
Along with Subban, Andreas Engqvist remains a restricted free agent with the Canadiens.
Joe Callahan, Chris Campoli, Mathieu Darche, Alex Henry, Brad Staubitz, Brian Willsie, Hunter Bishop, Andrew Conboy, Olivier Fortier, Dany Masse, Mark Mitera and Robert Slaney are currently unrestricted free agents with the club.
The Montreal Canadiens locked down winger Max Pacioretty with a six-year contract extension Monday night.
