Blue Jays’ Matt Shoemaker suffers left knee sprain vs. Athletics

Watch as Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Matt Shoemaker is injured during a rundown against the Oakland Athletics.

OAKLAND – Matt Shoemaker left Saturday’s start with a left knee injury after chasing down Athletics third baseman Matt Chapman in a rundown.

Blue Jays trainers helped Shoemaker off of the field and into the Blue Jays’ clubhouse while Sam Gaviglio prepared to enter the game. The club continues evaluating the 32-year-old right-hander to determine the severity of his injury.

Shoemaker’s off to a strong start with a 1.57 ERA over the course of 28.2 innings, including three on Saturday. The Blue Jays signed him to a one-year, $3.5 million contract over the winter and he’s controllable through 2020 as an arbitration-eligible player.

Upcoming off days on April 22, 25 and 29 would allow the Blue Jays to get by with just four starters for a while in the event that Shoemaker cannot make his next start.
