KANSAS CITY – The Toronto Blue Jays continued to stockpile arms for their farm system, agreeing to trade reliever David Phelps to the Chicago Cubs for minor-league right-hander Thomas Hatch, according to an industry source.

The deal is the third one ahead of Wednesday’s trade deadline, with the 24-year-old Hatch, a third-round pick in 2016, becoming the fifth pitcher added to the system in two days.

Hatch had been pitching at double-A Tennessee, where he’s struck out 93 batters against 37 walks in 100 innings over 21 starts.

The trade opens up a 25-man roster spot likely to be filled by Sean Reid-Foley, who will start Tuesday night against the Kansas City Royals.
