After getting roughed up in Buffalo on Tuesday, Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Aaron Sanchez will make at least one more appearance with the triple-A Bisons, general manager Alex Anthopoulos told Sportsnet 590 the FAN’s Jeff Blair Wednesday.
Sanchez has been on the disabled list since June 6 with a lat strain, but says he’s been “ready for a while” to return to the Blue Jays.
It was initially expected that he would return as soon as Wednesday or Thursday, but after surrendering two unearned runs in two thirds of an inning Tuesday, it appears he still has kinks to work out.
When he does return, the 22-year-old will be working out of the bullpen, something he hasn’t done since he made his major league debut late last season. He found success as a reliever in 2014, posting a 1.09 ERA while striking out 27 batters over 33 innings.
Sanchez appeared in 11 games as a starter this year, putting up a 3.55 ERA with 42 strikeouts while also walking 37 batters.
Despite his current command issues, Sanchez has expressed his desire to start again, though that doesn’t seem likely for this season, given Toronto’s need in the bullpen.
