The Cleveland Indians sent starting pitcher Zach Plesac home after he violated team rules by leaving their Chicago hotel unannounced, according to multiple reports.
Ken Rosenthal and Zack Meisel of The Athletic first reported the team’s decision, which ESPN’s Jeff Passan has since confirmed as well.
Plesac, who grew up an hour south of Chicago in Crown Point, Ind., pitched against the White Sox on Saturday afternoon before going out with friends that evening. He is the first known player to be punished for violating health and safety protocols related to COVID-19.
The Athletic reported that Plesac must quarantine for 72 hours and will be tested daily, and the team could take additional preventative measures if needed.
