The red-hot Oakland Athletics have revived their playoff hopes in the second half of the season and are staying loose in the process.
Since embarking on their magical run in mid-July, the wild-card leading A’s have adopted a Weekend at Bernies-inspired dance as part of their celebration routine. The dance became an internet sensation in 2010 after a rapper known as ISA released the song and video ‘Moving like Bernie’ that featured people mimicking a dance featured in Weekend at Bernie’s II.
And on Saturday, actor Terry Kiser, who played Bernie in the cult classic films, threw out the first pitch in a bizarre series of events before Saturday’s 7-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.
The song-and-dance routine picked up in Oakland when Brandon Inge changed his walk-up music to ‘Bernie Lean’ by rap duo ATM and IMD. Outfielder Coco Crisp has used the song prior to his at-bats after Brandon Inge was placed on the disabled list Aug. 14.
The moves have spread from the clubhouse to the stands, where fans and local broadcasters have latched onto the routine, much like Milwaukee’s Beast Mode and the Rangers’ Antlers and Claws last season.
