TORONTO (January 16, 2014) The countdown is on! Sochi 2014 fever heats up the pages of the latest issue of Sportsnet magazine and the burning question on every Canadian’s mind is, will Canada’s National Men’s Hockey Team bring home gold one more time? Features editor Gare Joyce outlines his five-step plan for what Team Canada has to do in order to once again achieve Olympic Games glory.

The hockey-heavy issue, available on newsstands now, also features columnist Scott Morrison’s warning to soak up the Olympic Games hockey action in Sochi while it lasts, as this is likely the last time NHL players head to the Olympic Winter Games for a while.

PLUS: It’s time to forgive Vince
Nearly a decade has passed since Vince Carter’s controversial trade from the Toronto Raptors to the New Jersey Nets, signalling the end of the team’s early golden years.  Now – even as the 37-year-old Dallas Maverick nears retirement – boos still rain down at Air Canada Centre whenever Carter takes the court in Toronto against his former team.  Once the ultimate Canadian sports hero, is the ongoing hostility really deserved?

“Whatever perceived sins Vince Carter was guilty of in Toronto have never again manifested themselves in his long career,” writes Michael Grange. “It’s worth asking if maybe, just maybe, Carter wasn’t the problem.”

In addition to Sportsnet magazine content, Sportsnet presents Vince Carter: The Re-Imagination of VC, a special 30-minute feature on Carter’s tumultuous relationship with Toronto on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 9:30 p.m. ET/6:30 p.m. PT on Sportsnet East, Ontario and Pacific (See listings for more details regarding encore broadcasts). The feature will air immediately following Sportsnet’s presentation of the Dallas Mavericks vs. Toronto Raptors, live from Air Canada Centre on Sportsnet East, Ontario, West and Pacific at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Vince Carter: The Re-Imagination of VC features exclusive interviews with Vince Carter, former MLSE president and CEO Richard Peddie, former Raptors general manager Glen Grunwald, former Raptors general manager and trade orchestrator Rob Babcock, one-time teammate Alvin Williams, and many more.

  • Boys to Men: How a small Minnesota high school shaped the careers of Team Canada stars, including alumni Sidney Crosby and Jonathan Toews. Joyce reports from Shattuck-St. Mary’s in Faribault, Minnesota
  • Plan B: Despite a seemingly annual roster tumult, the Boston Bruins remain a perennial Cup threat. Senior writer Ryan Dixon explains how
