The 2027 women's world curling championship site appears to have been determined.
And it's not exactly a curling hotbed.
World Curling is planning to hold the annual event in the United Arab Emirates, CBC Sports' Devin Heroux reported on Friday.
The federation is also eyeing a men's world championship in the country, per Heroux.
In an email to CBC Sports, World Curling head of communications Chris Hamilton said the organization is in "advanced discussions" with the UAE to bring the women's curling worlds there.
"Those discussions also involve wider growth opportunities in the region, including the hosting of a world men’s championship at a future date, the running of regional championships, as well as camps and courses provided by the World Curling Academy," Hamilton wrote, per CBC Sports.
The championship is set to take place March 13-21. The men's event is scheduled for later that month in Saint John.
Canada hosts one of the two world championships each year, alternating between men's and women's.
The UAE would be a particularly peculiar choice for World Curling due to the ongoing war in the region, which has yet to be resolved.
"We do recognize that there are particular challenges in the region at this moment in time, which is why we are being conscientious and patient in the contractual discussions," Hamilton wrote, per CBC Sports.
For now, curlers are focused on the opening event of the Grand Slam of Curling season in Victoria, where group play on Sportsnet+ wraps up Friday.
