TORONTO — A familiar name headlined the CFL player of the week honours on Tuesday.
Eskimos running back Jerome Messam was named best Canadian for the fifth time this season. The Toronto native had 19 carries for 115 yards, including a 24-yarder in Edmonton’s 31-24 win over the Argonauts on Friday.
Messam was Canadian of the month in July.
The CFL’s second-ranked rusher also caught three Ricky Ray passes for 43 yards, including an 18-yarder. Ray was also honoured, being named CFL offensive player of the week after throwing 347 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran in his first TD of the season.
Messam has rushed for 964 yards this season. If he rushes for 1,000 yards this year, he will be the first Canadian to do so since 2000.
Blue Bombers rookie defensive end/linebacker Jason Vega was named defensive player of the week for his role in Winnipeg’s 26-25 come-from-behind victory over the Montreal Alouettes.
Hamilon Tiger-Cats punter/kicker Justin Medlock was selected special teams player of the week.
The weekly awards are sponsored by Gibson’s Finest.
