At last, Chris Williams will have stability in his pro football career.
CFL sources told Sportsnet that Williams, the electrifying receiver and kick returner, is set to be back in Ottawa for the second consecutive season. Williams is a pending free agent, but has agreed to terms on another one-year deal that will keep him as one of the league’s highest paid receivers.
Williams has been on and off six pro rosters in as many years, and finally has stability after he emerged as one of the CFL’s lethal weapons during a three-season stay in Hamilton (2010-2012). After a messy departure from the Tiger-Cats, Williams spent time with both the New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears before signing in Ottawa prior to this season.
The 2016 contract is not yet official, in case there is NFL interest in Williams this off-season, but at the age of 28 it appears those opportunities have come to pass.
Williams has been a focal part of the Redblacks offence this season on the march to the Grey Cup, leading the East Division in receiving yards (1,214) on 88 catches and five touchdowns. Williams has also handled punt and kickoff returns.
In 2012, with Hamilton, Williams set a new CFL record for return touchdowns in a single season.
Williams originally signed with Ottawa in April. Prior to his time with the Tiger-Cats, he was with the Miami Dolphins and Cleveland Browns.
