Golf majors odds: Dominant Rory McIlroy highlights the board

The hopes of golf fans have been raised by the PGA Tour’s plan to resume its season in mid-June. As part of the revised schedule, the 2020 PGA Championship is now set for August 6-9, with the US Open now in September, and the 84th edition of the Masters now in November.

Rory McIlroy was enjoying a stellar campaign when the PGA Tour season was suspended back in mid-March. However, the world’s top-ranked golfer looks to the resumption of play lagging on the latest odds to win the US Open, set as a +1000 wager on those golf futures at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

McIlroy opened the season on a dominant run, finishing no worse than sixth through six events, including a win at the WGC-HSBC Champions event. The Northern Ireland native, who turns 31 next week, has carried over his strong play from last season, when he recorded 14 top-10 finishes and three wins, capped by his victory at the RBC Canadian Open. But major tournament glory has escaped McIlroy since he claimed victory at the 2014 PGA Championship, particularly at the US Open, where he has missed the cut four times since his lone win back in 2011.

Brooks Koepka edges out McIlroy as a +800 favourite at betting sites to earn his third career US Open title. Koepka has been a force in golf’s major tournaments over the past three years, earning a pair of PGA Championship titles to go along with his two US Open wins, and finishing among the top four golfers in each of last year’s four majors. However, the 29-year-old American was off to a shaky start to the current season when play was suspended, finishing no better than 43rd in five outings, and missing the cut on two occasions.

Further down the US Open odds, McIlroy is joined by Dustin Johnson at +1000, followed by Tiger Woods at +1400, while Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas sit at +2000.

Woods entered 2020 amid high expectations after enjoying a spectacular comeback season in 2019, highlighted by his victory at the Masters. The 15-time major champion was looking steady early in the season, picking up the ZOZO Championship and a ninth-place finish at the Farmers Insurance Open. However, those performances have failed to buoy Woods on the golf futures, where he joins Koepka as a +1000 co-second favourite on the odds to win the Masters while sitting back at +1400 on the PGA Championship odds.

Not surprisingly, it is McIlroy who leads the way to win both those tournaments, set as +800 chalk to win his third career PGA Championship title, and as a short +650 favourite to finally claim his first-ever green jacket.
