Not only did the London Knights extend their win streak to 15 games — the longest streak in the CHL this season — but they did it in historic fashion. The visiting Knights and Mississauga Steelheads set an OHL record for the longest shootout in league history, by going 19 rounds at the Hershey Centre on Sunday. After both clubs used every player on the bench, Seth Griffith beat Spencer Martin for the second time to give London a 4-3 victory.
Don’t forget that you can catch London in action this Friday at 7:00 p.m. ET on Sportsnet, as the Knights host the Niagara IceDogs on CHL Friday Night Hockey.
Speaking of consistency, Seattle Thunderbirds rookie Roberts Lipsbergs extended his point streak to nine games over the weekend. The Riga, Latvia native has 11 goals and 14 points on his current streak, and has been on fire most recently with seven goals in his past four games. Lipsbergs, who leads the Thunderbirds in scoring, buried two goals in a confidence-building win over Kamloops on Sunday night, including a beauty that left Blazers goalie Taran Kozun swimming in the blue paint:
It seems like every week, we post a highlight-reel play by the Halifax Mooseheads, but that’s only because they generate highlight-reel moments on a weekly basis. This weekend was no exception, as Nathan MacKinnon scored his 22nd goal of the season against Chicoutimi on Friday while outskating and outmaneuvering Saguenéens defenceman Philippe Archambault, before going backhand-shelf on a helpless Julio Billia. Oh yeah, and the spin-o-rama pass from Martin Frk wasn’t too bad either:
The Sarnia Sting went three-for-three in as many nights this weekend, and have claimed top spot in the West Division. OHL Player of the Week Charles Sarault produced eight points on the road trip, while Alex Galchenyuk remained red hot with eight points in three games, including a hat-trick against Peterborough on Saturday:
The Montreal Canadiens first rounder now sits third in OHL scoring with 49 points in 28 games.
If the expectations were high in Erie this season, then they just got higher. After Otters General Manager Sherry Bassin announced the firing of head coach Robbie Ftorek last Thursday, his team failed to win on a northern Ontario road trip this weekend. The Otters dropped a 6-4 decision to the Soo Greyhounds, who are having their own problems this year, and fell 2-1 to the struggling Sudbury Wolves.
