The Mooseheads worked their magic again this weekend with a win over Cape Breton on Friday night, and for those who weren’t in Halifax to see Jonathan Drouin, Nathan MacKinnon, and Martin Frk execute a phenomenal passing play for the game’s opening goal, thanks to the Mooseheads YouTube account, we can watch this beauty over and over again:
Unfortunately for Halifax fans, it wasn’t all good news for their team. The Mooseheads saw their four-game win streak end with a 3-0 loss to the surging Moncton Wildcats. It was the first game this season the Mooseheads failed to score.
Nikita Kucherov made his presence felt with his new club this weekend. After QMJHL Reporter Jeremy Fraser broke news that Kucherov had been traded to Rouyn-Noranda, the Tampa Bay Lightning second-rounder produced two goals, two assists and a plus-4 rating in two games with the Huskies. Check out some of the Russian’s work from Friday’s 4-0 win against Shawinigan, including the nice play at the 0:45 mark, where Kucherov’s blocks a clearing attempt with a strong forecheck to set-up Maxime St-Cyr for a goal.
The Red Deer Rebels remain undefeated since team owner and GM Brent Sutter took over behind the bench. The Rebels are now 5-0 since the coaching change, and have really tightened up on defence by averaging a remarkable 0.80 goals-against in their last five games.
Staying with coaches in the WHL, congratulations to Spokane Chiefs head coach Don Nachbaur for coaching his 1,000th game in the Western Hockey League on Friday night. The Chiefs made the night even more special for their bench boss by defeating Nachbaur’s former team, the Tri-City Americans, 5-2 on home ice.
In the OHL, it was announced on Friday the league suspended Ottawa 67’s forward Sean Monahan 10 games for his hit on Plymouth Whalers captain Colin MacDonald. The hit, which can be seen here, occurred late in the third period of their Nov. 18 game. As you can see, Monahan’s elbow makes direct contact with MacDonald’s head, however, no penalty was called on the play.
The London Knights extended their win streak to 11 games this weekend with a 3-0 win over the Owen Sound Attack. The Knights not only spread their lead in the OHL standings with 40 points, but also ended Attack goaltender Jordan Binnington’s shutout streak at 205 minutes and 54 seconds, when Seth Griffith scored 5:54 into the second period. London owns a 2-0 record against their Western Conference contenders this season.
