The Columbus Blue Jackets have signed defenceman Seth Jones to a six-year contract extension.
Jones’s new deal is worth $32.4 million and carries an annual salary cap hit of $5.4 million.
The Blue Jackets eliminated any threat of an offer sheet for the 21-year-old blue liner.
Columbus acquired Jones in a January trade with the Nashville Predators in exchange for centre Ryan Johansen.
The Blue Jackets currently sit with $42,858 (figures via generalfanager.com) in cap space with 12 forwards, seven defencemen, and two goaltenders under contract for 2016-17. GM Jarmo Kekäläinen could explore options to free up some space under the cap with two days remaining in the window for teams to exercise their right to buy out existing contracts.
Jones totalled three goals and 31 points in 81 games in 2015-16.
