Canucks’ Quinn Hughes to miss game vs. Sharks with lower-body injury

Quinn Hughes would head to the locker room and not return after what appears to be an ankle injury.

Vancouver Canucks defenceman Quinn Hughes will miss Saturday’s game against the San Jose Sharks while he recovers from an ankle injury.

Hughes suffered the injury in Friday’s loss to the Anaheim Ducks. Late in the first period, while pivoting from skating backwards to forwards, Hughes fell awkwardly to the ice. He didn’t return to the game and the team didn’t have an update on his condition afterwards.

In a corresponding move, the team recalled defenceman Oscar Fantenberg from his conditioning stint with AHL Utica.

Canucks coach Travis Green said Saturday night that Hughes is day-to-day.

Hughes, 19, has already emerged as a leader on the blue line for the Canucks in his rookie season. His 10 points in 12 games are one off the rookie scoring lead, and his 19:20 average ice time is fourth on the team.
