VANCOUVER — Mikael Samuelsson is the latest player to leave the Detroit Red Wings.
The free-agent winger signed a three-year contract with the Vancouver Canucks on Friday.
“It feels as if Vancouver really believes in me,” Samuelsson told Swedish Web site Aftonbladet. “I’m very pleased with the contract and I’m looking forward to play in Vancouver.”
He told the site that he doesn’t know who he’ll play with in Vancouver, but would enjoy playing with fellow Swedes Daniel and Henrik Sedin, who re-signed with the Canucks for five years on Wednesday.
“It would be fun playing with the Sedins, but you have to earn your spot in that line,” Samuelsson told Aftonbladet.
Samuelsson spent the past four seasons in Detroit, winning the Stanley Cup in 2008 and falling one game short this year.
The 32-year-old has played 466 career NHL games, scoring 86 goals and 208 points.
He’s the third forward to leave the Red Wings this spring. Marian Hossa and Tomas Kopecky signed with the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this week.
