Red Wings’ Howard stretchered off vs. Capitals

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard stretched out badly while allowing a fluky goal to the Capitals and was taken off the ice on a stretcher.

Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard was stretchered off the ice early in the first period against the Washington Capitals Saturday with a groin injury.

Howard went down attempting to make a save on Capitals forward Troy Brouwer after turning the puck over behind the Red Wings net. Brouwer scored on the play at the 1:53 mark and Howard remained on the ice in visible pain.

The 30-year-old, who was named to the NHL All-Star roster an hour before the game, was replaced by backup netminder Petr Mrazek who will remain in the net for the remainder of the game.

The extent of Howard’s injury is unknown at this time.

Howard is 16-7-7 with a .921 save percentage and 2.08 goals-against average this season.
