The Edmonton Oilers bolstered its blue-line on the opening day of free agency, signing veteran defenceman Andrej Sekera to a long-term deal.

Sekera will earn an average of $5.5 million per season for the next six seasons.

The 29-year-old split last season with the Carolina Hurricanes and Los Angeles Kings, registering a total of 23 points in 73 games.

While the Oilers have some of the best young forwards in the NHL, their back end was a mess last season. Sekera is reliable and can log 20-plus minutes a night.
