Flames goalie Mike Smith day-to-day with injury

Mike Smith seems to injury his groin with just over a second left in the game. He had to be helped off the ice afterwards.

The Calgary Flames received some good news about goaltender Mike Smith on Tuesday.

Per head coach Glen Gulutzan, Smith’s injury is not as serious as many initially thought.

The news confirms an earlier report from Sportsnet’s Eric Francis.

Smith was injured in the final seconds of the Flames’ 3-2 win against the New York Islanders on Sunday when he stopped a shot from John Tavares, and needed to be helped off the ice with an apparent lower-body injury.

He is officially listed as day-to-day. In the meantime, backup goalie David Rittich will fill in, while the team also announced the emergency call-up of Jon Gillies from AHL Stockton.

The Flames are in Boston to take on the Bruins Tuesday night at 7 p.m. ET.
