The Philadelphia Flyers dipped into the U.S. college pool in order to build up their goaltending depth, agreeing to terms on an entry-level deal with NCAA netminder Alex Lyon.
Lyon, 23, has spent three seasons playing for Yale University and was recently mentioned by Sportsnet’s Damien Cox as one of the three college free agent goaltenders that were drawing interest from NHL teams.
The 6-foot-1 goalie recorded a 19-8-4 record with a 1.64 goals-against average and .936 save percentage in 31 games in 2015-16.
He also recorded five shutouts en route to helping Yale reach the 2016 NCAA East Region after a second-place finish in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC).
Lyon was a top-10 finalist for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s most outstanding player.
The Flyers’ primary two NHL goaltenders, Steve Mason and Michal Neuvirth, are both scheduled to become unrestricted free agents after the 2016-17 season.
