Forward Phil Varone agrees to one-year contract with Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens have agreed to a one-year, two-way contract with free agent forward Phil Varone.

The contract pays Varone $700,000 at the NHL level.

Varone, 28, had three goals and seven points in 47 games with the Philadelphia Flyers last season. He also had 11 goals and 28 points in 22 games with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.

Varone was originally a fifth-round pick by the Sharks in 2009.
