Gerber faces 3-game suspension

SPORTSNET.CA –-

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Martin Gerber will receive an automatic three-game suspension from the National Hockey League as a result of an incident during Tuesday’s 3-2 win over the Washington Capitals, Sportsnet has learned.

Gerber was ejected from the game during the third period for pushing referee Mike Leggo in protest of Washington’s tying goal.

According to the NHL rule book: "Any player or goalkeeper who, by his actions, physically demeans an official or physically threatens an official by (but not limited to) throwing a stick or any other piece of equipment or object at or in the general direction of an official, shooting the puck at or in the general direction of an official, spitting at or in the general direction of an official, or who deliberately applies physical force to an official solely for the purpose of getting free of such an official during or immediately following an altercation shall be suspended for not less than three (3) games."

As a result of the suspension, the Maple Leafs are expected to call up goaltender Justin Pogge on Wednesday from the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
