MONTREAL — Some of Canada’s greatest hockey legends will salute the sport as part of a Montreal Symphony Orchestra concert which will pay tribute to the game next month.

Guy Lafleur, Henri Richard, Yvan Cournoyer, Pierre Bouchard, Stephane Quintal and Rejean Houle will be part of the "Hockey Legends" show, which will be staged on Feb. 20.

Montreal Symphony Orchestra music director Kent Nagano will conduct the concert, which is described as an encounter of symphonic music and the collective imagination of Quebec.

"All of us need heroes," Nagano said. "Heroes inspire us."

Pierre Boivin, president of the Montreal Canadiens hockey club, said the team is honoured to participate in the concert.<.

"These two Montreal traditions — the MSO and the Club de hockey Canadien — together make up a team of the highest level."

The concert will feature music by composer Francois Dompierre and will follow the story of a fictional young man who dreams of being in the National Hockey League.

The former hockey players will take part in the spoken word portion of the event.
