Hurricanes ink Malone to two-year contract

RALEIGH, N.C. — The Carolina Hurricanes and free-agent centre Brad Malone have agreed to a two-year contract.

The team announced the agreement Tuesday, the first day of the NHL’s free agency period.

The 25-year-old Malone will make $600,000 this season and $700,000 in 2015-16.

General manager Ron Francis calls Malone “a big, physical forward” who “helps improve our team’s depth up front.”

He had three goals and two assists in 32 games with Colorado this season and has played parts of the past three seasons with the Avalanche.

Two players from last year’s team have signed elsewhere — centre Manny Malhotra received a one-year deal from Montreal while backup goalie Justin Peters agreed to a two-year contract with Washington.
