Hurricanes sign No. 2 overall pick Svechnikov to entry-level deal

The Carolina Hurricanes had the second-overall pick at the NHL Draft and selected Andrei Svechnikov of the Barrie Colts.

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed No. 2 overall pick Andrei Svechnikov to a three-year, entry-level contract.

The deal will pay the 18-year-old Russian forward $832,500 per season at the NHL level and $70,000 at the the AHL level.

“This an exciting moment for our organization,” said Hurricanes GM Don Waddell in a statement. “Andrei is the type of elite talent that you can build a team around. He has a bright future in a Carolina Hurricanes uniform.”

Selected second overall in the 2018 NHL Draft from the Barrie Colts, Svechnikov was a dynamic winger in the OHL, scoring 40 goals and 72 points in in 44 games played last season.
