Another first for the Seattle Kraken.

The league’s newest expansion franchise announced Friday the hiring of Everett Fitzhugh as the team’s first broadcaster, making him the first Black person to hold the title in NHL history.

“As someone who’s worked in hockey for more than a decade, to be named a part of the broadcast and content team for a brand-new NHL franchise — particularly one with an organization as strong as the Kraken — is a dream come true,” Fitzhugh said in a press release. “Getting to the NHL has always been my goal. I look forward to representing the Kraken organization throughout the greater Seattle community.”

Fitzhugh spent the last five seasons with the ECHL’s Cincinnati Cyclones, serving as the team’s director of media relations and broadcasting. During that time, he also made his first guest-broadcasting appearance for the Washington Capitals.

The job achieves a life-long dream for Fitzhugh who after attending his first game in person as a kid turned to his mother and said, “I want to be a hockey announcer.”

“I want Kraken fans to know I share their passion for hockey and the inaugural season of this franchise,” said Fitzhugh.

“I intend to be out in the community and meeting fans when the time is right. Until then, we will create other ways to reach out.”

The Kraken also announced Friday the hirings of Jonny Greco as senior vice-president of game presentation and live entertainment and Lamont Buford as vice-president of game presentation.
