Leafs bring in new director of sports science

The Toronto Maple Leafs have hired Dr. Jeremy Bettle as their Director of Sports Science & Performance, the team announced Monday.

According to the Leafs’ press release, Bettle will “oversee all areas of the Maple Leafs, Marlies and prospects as it relates to strength and conditioning, nutrition, injury prevention, injury rehabilitation and all factors pertaining to athlete performance optimization.”

Assistant general manager Kyle Dubas also said the following in the release:

“In hiring Dr. Bettle, our sole objective is to be able to have our players know that as a program, we are doing everything we can in all aspects to optimize their performance and maximize their potential as a hockey player, regardless of what stage of their career they’re at.”

This is Bettle’s first foray into the NHL, having spent the past four years in the NBA as the strength and conditioning coach and director of nutrition for the Brooklyn Nets.

He has also worked with Team USA Men’s Basketball for the London 2012 Olympic Games.
