Penguins GM confident team will add centre before deadline

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford joins Prime Time Sports to discuss whether he's watching the Olympics, whether the Pens will be active at the trade deadline and more.

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford says the team is trying to add depth at the centre position and is convinced he’ll be able to do so prior to the Feb. 26 trade deadline.

“I do feel confident we’re going to add a player, based on the number of players I’m talking about and teams I’m talking to now,” Rutherford said Wednesday evening during Prime Time Sports on Sportsnet 590 The FAN.

Rutherford expressed confidence in the organization’s defenceman — both in the NHL and AHL — as well as his goaltending, but told hosts Bob McCown and John Shannon that adding a centre is a priority.

“That’s what I’ll work on until I accomplish that,” he said.

The Penguins have won two straight Stanley Cups and Rutherford says the pursuit of a third will take precedence over plans for the future. Listen to the full interview in the video player at the top of this page to hear more.
