Red Wings’ Howard out 4-6 weeks with MCL sprain

Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard leaves the game after he is involved in a collision in his own crease.

The Detroit Red Wings will be without injured goaltender Jimmy Howard for the next four to six weeks. Howard has suffered an MCL sprain.

Howard was injured during Detroit’s last game on Tuesday against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 4-1 loss also resulted in Tampa losing its goalie, Ben Bishop, for 3-4 weeks.

The injury occurred during the second period of the game when defenceman Nick Jensen hit Erik Condra in front of the net and both players fell on top of Howard.

In 17 games this season, Howard has a 5-7-1 record with a 1.96 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.

Back-stopping duties will be left to Petr Mrazek and Jared Coreau until Howard returns.
