Red Wings sign Valtteri Filppula to two-year contract

The Detroit Red Wings have signed centre Valtteri Filppula to a two-year contract.

Filppula, 35, returns to team that drafted him in 2002 and where he spent the first eight seasons of his career.

The Vantaa, Finland native spent the 2018-19 season with the New York Islanders, recording 17 goals and 31 points in 72 games.

A veteran of 14 NHL seasons, Filppula has 185 goals and 494 points in 948 games with the Red Wings, Tampa Bay Lightning, Philadelphia Flyers and Islanders.
