Ron and Don: Capitals’ Braden Holtby is ‘in a groove’

Ron and Don break down the first period in Game 3 and cite Braden Holtby as an early standout.

Don Cherry says goaltender Braden Holtby is playing so well, the ice is tilting in favour of the Washington Capitals.

“Washington is the club right now, they’re in control,” Cherry said on Coach’s Corner during the first intermission of Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final. “They know Holtby’s back there.”

The Capitals are riding high after winning Game 2, which was capped by an incredible save from Holtby late in the third.

Cherry showed that save again and called it “great.” But he also credited Holtby for his ability to pass the puck to his teammates.

“This guy is something,” Cherry said over clips of Holtby’s passes from Game 2. “He is in a groove.”

Cherry added that Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury needs to match Holtby’s play to give Vegas a chance.

“I said this before the game, but Fleury’s got to play like he did against Winnipeg,” Cherry said.

Fleury did make a highlight-reel save of his own in the first. Expect plenty more of those from both goalies before the Cup is handed out.
