The Ottawa Senators organization has been involved in plenty of regrettable moments over the past year or so.
One of those examples might just be trading away Mike Hoffman, who is thriving with the Florida Panthers.
“I think he got a real stiff deal, a raw deal in Ottawa,” Don Cherry said Saturday during the Coach’s Corner segment of Hockey Night in Canada.
Hoffman had a tumultuous off-season with the Senators as harassment allegations against his fiancée arose — allegations both of them denied.
On June 19, the Senators sent Hoffman, along with defensive prospect Cody Donaghey and a 2020 fifth-round pick to the San Jose Sharks for Mikkel Boedker, defenceman Julius Bergman and a sixth-round pick in 2020.
Hours later the Sharks flipped Hoffman and a 2018 seventh-round pick to the Panthers for fourth- and fifth-round picks in 2018 plus a 2019 second-rounder.
Hoffman has been lighting up the scoresheet with his new team ever since.
“They give this guy away,” Cherry added. “Didn’t want him. He got a raw deal there. I’m telling you as I said here, I know guys. He’s a good guy.”
The 28-year-old set a new Panthers franchise record earlier this week by breaking Pavel Bure’s consecutive-game point streak, which was 13 games. Hoffman scored again Saturday to extend his point streak to 15 in a row — the longest such streak in the NHL this season.
