Senators prospect Josh Norris named AHL’s most outstanding rookie

CHL insider Sam Cosentino breaks down the top 5 prospects in the Ottawa Senators system, which starts with Josh Norris, with Logan Brown being their Prospect of Interest (POI).

Ottawa Senators prospect Josh Norris has been voted the winner of the Dudley (Red) Garrett Memorial Award as the AHL’s outstanding rookie for the 2019-20 season.

The 21-year-old led all rookies and was tied for third in AHL in scoring with 31 goals and 61 points in 56 games. He also led the Belleville Senators in points and was named an AHL First All-Star Team and to the All-Rookie Team for the 2019-20 campaign.

Norris made his NHL debut on Feb. 22 against the Montreal Canadiens and played three games with the Senators.

“On behalf of the entire organization, I want to express a profound congratulations to Josh Norris on winning the Red Garrett Memorial Award,” said Senators general manager Pierre Dorion in a statement. “Not only does this signify a testament to Josh’s hard work, but having it voted upon by his peers is an additional accomplishment. With an outstanding combination of speed, skill and competitiveness every time he steps on the ice, Josh is a deserving winner of this prestigious award.”

The Oxford, Mich., native was acquired by Ottawa from the San Jose Sharks in the Erik Karlsson trade. Norris was originally selected 19th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by the Sharks.
