Senators sign Macoy Erkamps to entry-level deal

Elliotte Friedman and Damien Cox take a look at the NHL’s biggest stories, with the Predators trying to sign Jimmy Vesey and the AHL cracking down on fighting.

The Ottawa Senators have signed undrafted free agent Macoy Erkamps to a three-year, entry-level contract.

Erkamps, 21, is in the middle of his fifth Western Hockey League season, and his second with the Brandon Wheat Kings.

He captained the Wheat Kings to first place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference this year, while scoring 13 goals and 71 points in 71 games. He finished second in league scoring among blue-liners and first in assists with 58.

“We are happy to have Macoy join the Senators organization,” said Senators general manager Bryan Murray in a news release. “He is a player we’ve had an eye on over the course of his junior career and we’ve watched him develop into one of the WHL’s top defencemen this season. He’s a talented, competitive guy whose game took a big jump this season.”

The Delta, B.C. native was an invitee to the Senators’ 2013 summer development camp.
