Sens’ Cowen faces hearing for hit on Girgensons

Senators d-man Jared Cowen will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety Wednesday, for this hit on Sabres center Zemgus Girgensons.

Busy week for Brendan Shanahan.

Ottawa Senators defenceman Jared Cowen will have a hearing with the NHL’s department of player safety Wednesday for the hit he delivered on Buffalo Sabres centre Zemgus Girgensons Tuesday night.

At 18:02 of the third period, Cowen hit Girgensons high as the forward entered the Sens’ zone. Cowen was not penalized on the play, but his hit will be reviewed on the grounds of illegal check to the head.

Girgensons, who had scored the game-tying goal in the second period, not only remained in the game but scored in the 10th round of a shootout to give the Sabres to a 2-1 victory at First Niagara Center.
