John Shannon joins Hockeycentral panel

Rogers Sportsnet has added one of the industry’s brightest minds to the Hockeycentral panel with the addition of John Shannon, former executive vice-president of programming and production for the NHL.

Making the change to the other side of the camera is truly a challenge," Shannon said. "My goal is to help explain the hockey world from another perspective…to tell stories that would otherwise go unnoticed…and to give hockey fans across the country a different viewpoint on the sport.”

Shannon will bring his expertise in the game after more than 30 years of overseeing the television production of regional and national NHL hockey games, including the production of 23 Stanley Cup Finals.

"We have a credible ‘hockey man,’ whose passion for the sport and access to the decision makers shall prove invaluable,’" said Dave Akande, Rogers Sportsnet’s vice-president of content. "We are confident that we have found another insider to join our Hockeycentral panel and ensure that we continue to be the destination for NHL information and opinion."

Before joining the NHL and NHL Network in 2008, Shannon served as the vice-president, programming and executive producer of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, overseeing the launch, implementation and operation of Leafs TV and Raptors NBA TV. Prior to that, he spent six years as the executive producer of Hockey Night in Canada on CBC.

Shannon has also been involved in the production of five Olympics, receiving an Emmy for his work on NBC’s coverage of hockey at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games.
