Leafs re-sign Ashton to one-year, two-way deal

The Toronto Maple Leafs signed centre Peter Holland to a two-year deal while locking up Carter Ashton for another season.

Restricted free agent Carter Ashton has accepted the qualifying offer extended to him by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

It is a one-year, two-way contract worth $850,000, according to Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports.

In 32 appearances with the Leafs last season, Ashton registered three assists, 19 penalty minutes and a plus-1 rating while averaging 6:16 of ice time. The 23-year-old also scored 16 goals and 23 points in 24 games with the Toronto Marlies in the American Hockey League.

Drafted 29th overall in 2009 by the Tampa Bay Lightning, Ashton was acquired by the Leafs in February 2012 in exchange for Keith Aulie. The Winnipeg native has played a total of 47 NHL games, all with the Leafs, since debuting in the league in March 2012.

Ashton is expected to battle for a spot on the Leafs’ third or fourth line in training camp, which begins in September.
