Wild give Schultz six-year extension

Sportsnet.ca — The Minnesota Wild signed defenceman Nick Schultz to a $21-million, six-year contract extension on Saturday. Schultz was due to become an unrestricted free agent July 1 and this season was earning $1.85 million.

Schultz, 25, is in his sixth season with the Wild and has collected 73 points (18 goals, 55 assists), 172 penalty minutes and a plus-25 rating in 428 games. He has one goal and 10 assists while appearing in all 61 games this season. He has served as team captain for January and February.

Schultz leads the Wild in blocked shots (102) and ranks second in hits (87) this season. The six-foot-one, 200-pound defenceman has missed just one game due to injury in six seasons and ranks third on the team’s all-time games played list.

The Strasbourg, Sask., native was originally selected by Minnesota in the second round (33rd overall) of the 2000 draft.
