Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Easton Cowan has (unofficially) tied a record set by one of hockey's greatest legends.
With an assist in Tuesday's game against the Kitchener Rangers Tuesday night, Cowan has now recorded a point in 61 straight OHL games for the London Knights.
Cowan's record, which dates back to last November, is unofficial because it spans two seasons but matches the CHL's all-time record set by Lemieux with the Laval Voisins in 1983-84. Cowan has 42 goals and 103 points in his streak. Lemieux posted a mind-boggling 133 goals and 282 points during his.
“It’s cool,” Cowan told The London Free Press about nearing Lemieux's record, before adding, “I would not compare myself to him.”
The Maple Leafs selected Cowan in the first round, 28th overall, in 2023. The right winger from Mount Brydges, Ont., is expected to challenge for a spot on the Leafs as early as next season.
Despite Cowan's streak-extending assist, the Rangers won the game 5-2.
Jack Pridham had a goal and assist for the Rangers (31-9-3-1), who led 1-0 after the first period and 3-2 heading into the third. Matthew Andonovski, Cameron Mercer, Tanner Lam and Trent Swick (empty-netter) also scored for the hosts.
The Rangers, who are second in the Midwest Division behind the front-running Knights, are now only three points back of the visitors.
Landon Sim and Blake Montgomery scored for the Knights (34-7-1-0), who battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at 2-2, but Pridham's power-play goal at 17:24 of the second proved to be the winning goal.
The Rangers went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Knights were 0-for-4 with the man advantage. Both teams had 30 shots on goal.
