The Toronto Blue Jays lost designated hitter Anthony Santander in the seventh inning of Wednesday's game against the San Diego Padres.
Santander was ruled out by the team with left hip inflammation and replaced in the lineup by outfielder Jonatan Clase.
In his pinch-hit appearance, Clase picked up a two-RBI double with the bases loaded.
Before exiting, Santander was 1-for-3 with a single off the top of the wall in right field. He also hit a two-run homer in the series opener on Tuesday.
After the game, Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Santander is day-to-day going forward, per Sportsnet's Ben Nicholson-Smith.
“It was a little bit awkward and I don't want to take any chances with losing him for an extended period of time, so we'll see how he is tomorrow," Schneider said.
The 30-year-old switch-hitter has been dealing with hip and shoulder injuries over the past few weeks. He missed time in Toronto's series against the Seattle Mariners and Detroit Tigers due to the ailments.
With his three trips to the plate on Wednesday, Santander is now slashing .188/.266/.33 with six home runs and 18 RBIs in his debut season with the Blue Jays.
Toronto signed the 2024 Silver Slugger to a deferred five-year, $92.5-million contract in the off-season.
