The Toronto Blue Jays are supplementing their pitching staff with another arm.
Toronto has claimed right-handed knuckleballer Matthew Waldron from the San Diego Padres, the team announced Wednesday.
In a corresponding move, left-handed pitcher Patrick Corbin was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Waldron was designated for assignment by the Padres last week, opening up the window for the Jays to claim him.
Following Wednesday's 5-4 win over the Houston Astros, Blue Jays manager John Schneider told reporters that Waldron will join the team on Friday and work out of the bullpen.
"A unique profile ... can cover an inning, can cover multiple innings. Excited to have him. Haven't had a knuckleballer," Schneider said.
The 29-year-old has struggled in the majors this year, pitching to a 7.16 ERA with a 1.561 WHIP in 10 appearances (three starts). He has 28 strikeouts in 32.2 innings pitched.
His last MLB appearance came in a 7-2 win over the Miami Marlins on July 25, pitching two innings and giving up one run.
He's excelled at triple-A, however, posting a 1.33 ERA in eight appearances, all starts, with an even 1.000 WHIP.
The Omaha, Neb., native has a 5.19 ERA and 1.327 WHIP in 46 major-league games (36 starts) over his four seasons in MLB, all of which were spent with the Padres.
